Chief Timothy Clancy is pleased to announce that the Whitman Fire Department has been awarded two Assistance to Firefighters Grants (AFG) from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).
The two grants awarded through FEMA total $392,899.99.
The first grant awarded is for $281,814.28. This grant will be used to purchase and equip a new modern day forestry truck/brush truck. This will allow for better responses and allow for the truck to be used to assist in any incident where the Department needs to access areas that are off road.
The second grant awarded was for $111,085.71. This will be used to fund additional firefighter training. The training is aimed at providing additional training to continue to improve the Department's skills to better serve the community.
The Town of Whitman will match $19,645.02.
Assistance to Firefighters Grants are allocated to fire departments nationally to fund and aid the firefighting and emergency response needs of fire departments and non- affiliated emergency medical service organizations.
The federal grants help firefighters and other first responders obtain critically needed equipment, protective gear, emergency vehicles, training and other resources necessary for protecting the public and emergency personnel from fire and related hazards.
