The Department of Public Works is pleased to announce that after several applications the Town has received a “Complete Streets “grant in the amount of $363,674 This competitive grant is specifically for the improvement of Pedestrian and Motorist safety by constructing sidewalks and Pedestrian crossings in heavily used areas such as Parks , Recreation Fields and Commuter Rail stations. Whitman will be utilizing this Grant to improve the intersection at Park Ave and Essex St. by reconfiguring the Traffic Island and creating new crossing areas for Pedestrians walking from the Town Park to Memorial Field, the Police Station, Colebrook Blvd, VFW,Community Garden and the Commuter Rail Station. Also, as part of this project we will be installing new sidewalks along Park Ave and a Pedestrian Safety Island in front of the Church at the intersection of Park and Hayden Ave.
We ask that Motorist use caution when traveling through this area during Construction which is expected to last a few months.
Please note that Public Works Crews have placed Traffic safety barrels in the approximate configuration of the new Traffic Island to allow residents to familiarize themselves with the new Traffic Pattern.
